The madness of Halloween has arrived! This is the time of year I love the most (after Christmas, of course, because you guessed it, Christmas songs are about to start playing in our office soon). Halloween is the perfect time to catch up with friends and meet up in our funniest outfits. I can finally let go of my creativity without any limit! So I’m proposing you a really simple costume, which can be achieved without any sewing if you are not very comfortable with using needles. Ready to make all your friends hungry?
Here is the taco costume! It’s my obsession of the moment, a simple costume, that’s also very comfortable and really different from the generic costumes we can find in stores!
Level of difficulty: Easy. Basic sewing machine skills required.
Time required: About 1 hour
Required material :
- Felt :
- Hot glue gun or fabric glue
- Brown knit dress or sweater
You also have the option to buy a brown knit fabric and make your own basic dress. Like I showed you in “Edit patterns for Halloween” it’s possible! Here is a perfect basic dress pattern for all your costume ideas. Here are 2 knits you could use to make your dress:
STEP 1: You need to take 2 measurements of your back. The first one is the length, which is measured by following the spine starting for your neck all the way to your mid-buttock. This measurement will serve as the diameter of your circle for your shell. Second, measure the width of your back to properly locate where to put your armholes.
STEP 2: Follow the diagram below to draw your shell to your size.Cut this piece twice. Also, you can go ahead and cut the tomatoes, cheese, sour cream and lettuce according to the patterns.
To draw a perfect circle, my favourite technique is undoubtedly to use a rope and a pencil. It’s very simple. You just have to tie a string around your pencil, you can secure it with a tape. Then measure the radius of your circle, in this case, half the length of your back. At the other end of the shelf, install a pin with a head large enough to stop your knot. Put your pin in the center of your fabric and rotate the pencil to draw a circle. You can also fold your fabric in half to draw a semicircle and use tweezers to fix the string in the center.
As for the size of the arm holes, I’m giving you an alternative to avoid the math, calculations and diameter gibberish. I suggest you start with small narrow ovals and adjust them slowly by trying the piece directly on you. That way you can make sure they are adjusted to your size perfectly.
STEP 3: Make a 2 mm (1/16 in) stitch at the armholes and at the edges to join the two circles together. You can also opt for a soft taco by taking only one circle. This option is perfect if you don’t want to sew. Ideal for my colleague Amélie who has not yet dared to risk sewing.
STEP 4: You just have to stuff your taco with your pieces by glueing them on your dress or your shirt with some hot glue. For better adhesion, opt for a fabric glue. No matter what glue you choose, plan a drying time before wearing your suit.
You can now go to your Halloween fiesta!
