Corduroy is the iconic fabric of the ’60s and ’70s and was very popular in children’s fashion in the 90s.
It has made a comeback in our wardrobes in recent seasons. Often made of cotton or polyester/cotton, corduroy is sometimes made with a little elastane for more comfort. Like denim, corduroy is popular for its texture, durability and comfort. Use it for your jackets, pants, skirts and overalls.
Tips & tricks
Here are some tips and tricks that will enable you to work well with corduroy.
- Corduroy has a direction, so it’s very important when cutting your pieces to follow the direction of the corduroy you want on all pieces.
- When cutting, be sure to follow the direction of the ribs, parallel to your straight edge so that the fabric doesn’t twist.
- Also follow the ribs when sewing.
- To keep the ribs well rounded, avoid flattening them. When pressing, avoid ironing for nothing as much as possible and use a piece of corduroy positioned right side to right side so that the ribs fit together and iron on the back of the fabric. To press your seams, use the tip of the iron to minimize damage to the ribs. When sewing, reduce the pressure of your foot on the fabric.
- If you need to stabilize a part of your project, such as a collar, waistband or buttonhole, choose a sew-in interfacing rather than an iron-on interfacing to avoid crushing the ribs when gluing it on. Also choose an interfacing that is lighter than your fabric to avoid making your fabric too stiff.
- Corduroy makes a big mess when you’re cutting and sewing it. Be sure to store your other fabrics away from the corduroy storm! Overlock your pieces to prevent fraying during sewing.
- Don’t forget to reduce your seam allowance in corners and curves, as corduroy is already stiff. Avoid excess fabric in order to achieve nice seams.
- Use clever clips to assemble the pieces during sewing, especially when there are many
